Steins; Gate 0- A Dark Tale of Okabe Rinatarou That Time Forgot.
( REVIEW IS TO BE READ ONLY BY STEINS; GATE FANS, AS THE POST MAY CONTAIN MILD SPOILERS FROM THE ORGINAL ANIME/VN.
IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN STEINS; GATE ,BUT YOU HAVE SEEN TOKYO GHOUL, YOU REALLY...REALLY... NEED TO IMPROVE YOUR SHIT TASTE IN ANIME)
Ok, firstly it’s been a long time since I posted any sort of reviews as I consider myself nothing less of lazy. But, someone who’s an avid fan of the series I could not resist to post a review of this.
Steins; Gate 0 isn’t actually a sequel to Steins; Gate. It actually serves as a midquel to the original show/VN and fills in a lot of details that probably did not cross our mind. In terms of where the events of Steins; Gate 0 fits in the timeline, you all will need to jog your memory right towards where Okabe fails in his first attempt to open a path to Steins; Gate and is completely distraught. At that moment Okabe receives a video message from himself from the future who tells him about the plan to open the path of Steins; Gate worldline. The Okabe who sent the message from the future is the story we are talking about in Steins; Gate 0. The Okabe who failed, who got stuck in the Beta Worldline and had given up everything altogether. The story introduces new characters, new enemies and this time around it’s not just SERN we are worried about. Gameplay wise the game retains the same mobile phone which was used to trigger story even flags, only this time around all the events are triggered by Okabe’s interaction with the Amadues app on his phone. This definitely made it easier to play, but I still had to rely on a guide to unlock the true ending.
Going back to the story , despite it’s lighter moments the overall theme of the story remained darker than the original. Okabe is a shell of himself, depressed and barely the character we loved in the original game. Since we are already in the Beta worldline events have been put in motion that would lead to the inevitable WWIII and that becomes more and mover evident as the story progresses .The most important new character introduced is Maho who was Kurisu’s best friend in the Lab back in the USA and goes onto play a critical part in the events that play out. There was definitely romance buildup to Okabe and Mahou, which was cute but purists like me know that not the OTP we’re looking for.
An interesting aspect of Steins; Gate 0 is that Time Travel occurs without the phone wave existing in the immediate scenario, and have been mostly caused by powers who were rapidly trying to advance their own research of the Time Machine. This resulted in situations where worldlines have shifted abruptly, which was a little confusing initially.
Added to that, the amount of twists and turns the story had was nothing short of baffling and had me on my wits for the greater part of the game.
Steins; Gate was one the greatest VNs I had ever played, and it’s anime was definitely one of the best anime I have seen in the sci fi genre till date. Steins; Gate 0 lives up to the original in every possible way and does not disappoint. Hats off to the people who wrote this amazing story when most fans thought that there was nothing more to add to the original.

* The Steins;Gate 0 anime is slated for sometime in 2017. The first anime has been in the top 5 in MAL for a long time now, I do not see a reason why this one wont break in the top 10 once it releases*
